Kathy, a Missouri woman, has apologized after a video of her at a Black Lives Matter protest went viral and she reportedly lost her job.
The video shows Kathy at a protest in Branson, Missouri, holding a Confederate flag and wearing Make America Great Again apparel while confronting demonstrators. In the clip, she can be heard shouting “KKK belief” and saying she would teach her grandchildren to hate people of color.
HuffPost reported that the backlash cost Kathy her job. She has since apologized and said she will never wave the Confederate flag again.
According to Ozarks First, Kathy said she does not remember the comments she made because she “blacked out” during the event. She also told the station she did not understand the history of the flag or what it stands for.
Reaction to the apology has been mixed. Some protesters said they forgave her. Others did not accept it. Kenidra Woods, a mental health advocate, tweeted that the apology did not seem genuine and that the remarks about teaching her grandchildren hate hurt her deeply.
Protest organizer Faith Pittser told Ozarks First she does not believe the comments were a misunderstanding. She said Kathy “knew exactly what she was doing” and was shouting hateful words at protesters from the start of the event.
