A Florida father has been hospitalized for nearly three weeks after his son ignored his stepmother’s wishes to stay home to avoid contracting the virus.
Michelle Zymet shared with WSVN that her 21-year-old stepson went to a large gathering last month at a friend’s house, after she asked him not to attend.
“I pleaded with him every time he left the house, ‘Please wear your mask, take sanitizer, make sure you’re constantly washing your hands,’” Zymet told the station. “He always assured me, ‘Don’t worry, mom. I’m doing everything right, relax, chill.’ You know how these kids are, so I trusted in him.”
According to the stepmother, her unidentified stepson wore a mask but at some point during the party he took the mask off.
Zymet’s stepson’s decision led to four of his family members being infected, including the couple’s 14-year-old son, 6-year-old daughter, and her husband who is a diabetic.
“You let your guard down just one time, it’s all it takes,” according to Zymet. “You come home, and you infect the entire house.”
Zymet and the couple’s three children have recovered but her husband John Place remains in intensive care after being in intensive care at Westside Regional Medical Center in Plantation for two weeks.
Place has improved and the doctors have removed him from a ventilator, according to Zymet’s Facebook post.
“However, the doctor has told us that we’re not out of the woods yet and there is always the possibility that he may have to go back on the ventilator or other problems may arise but this is definitely some positive news.”
