The bullet that struck and killed a Washington police officer during a traffic stop was fired from the gun of a fellow police officer, Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team said in a statement.
Officer Jonathan Shoop, 32, was killed by gunfire from officer Mustafa Kumcur after the officers responded to gunfire from Henry Eugene Washington, who they pulled over for not having a license plate.
Washington is charged with first-degree aggravated murder, first-degree attempted murder, and vehicular assault, according to court records, CNN reports.
“The fact that Mr. Washington did not fire the fatal shot is immaterial to his culpability in this crime. But for Mr. Washington’s directed attack on the officers, Officer Shoop would be alive today,” the court records state.
Washington’s next court appearance is scheduled for August 3.
