In 2018, social media users blasted celebrity couple Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively for getting married on a plantation after Reynolds praised the movie, Black Panther.

Now, just two years later, the couple is apologizing for their ”giant f**cking mistake.”

In a recent interview with Fast Company, Reynolds addressed the controversial 2012 wedding venue, stating that he and his wife are “deeply” sorry.

“It’s something we’ll always be deeply and unreservedly sorry for,” the Deadpool star said. “It’s impossible to reconcile.”

Reynolds said he and Lively, who met in 2010 while filming Green Lantern together, ran across a South Carolina plantation while searching for a wedding venue on Pinterest. The couple said they now regret choosing Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens solely based on its scenery.

“What we saw after [the wedding] was a place built upon devastating tragedy,” Reynolds told the magazine.

Although the couple remarried at home a few years ago, the Golden Globes nominee said the guilt remained.

“Years ago, we got married again at home — but shame works in a weird way,” he said. “A giant f–king mistake like that can either cause you to shut down, or it can reframe things and move you into action. It doesn’t mean you won’t f–k up again. But repatterning and challenging lifelong social conditioning is a job that doesn’t end.”

Following the mild backlash two years ago, Reynolds and Lively made a joint effort to support the Black community. Last year, the couple donated $2 million to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights.

More recently, they gifted $200,000 to the LDF in May following the death of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.
