Joe Biden has picked Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate in November’s presidential election.
If they beat Trump, Harris will be the first Black and first woman Vice President in U.S. history. For now, she is the first black woman on a major party presidential ticket.
Biden made the announcement via text message to his supporters Tuesday afternoon writing, “‘Joe Biden here. Big news: I’ve chosen Kamala Harris as my running mate. Together, with you, we’re going to beat Trump.”
He tweeted shortly after, “I have the great honor to announce that I’ve picked @KamalaHarris — a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants — as my running mate.”
“Back when Kamala was Attorney General, she worked closely with Beau. I watched as they took on the big banks, lifted up working people, and protected women and kids from abuse. I was proud then, and I’m proud now to have her as my partner in this campaign,” he said.
News had been swirling for weeks as to who would take the vice president spot after Biden announced he would choose a woman.
About 11 women were believed to be considered including Rep. Karen Bass and Stacey Abrams.
But ultimately, the spot went to Harris, who is a Senator for California and a former attorney general.
