It seems like Black people just cannot catch a break in America, especially our Black men.
In another case of being Black while in America, a black man in San Antonio was stopped and taken into custody by police while he was headed out for a jog Tuesday afternoon.
According to CNN, officers were searching for a nearby suspect who was involved in a domestic violence dispute. Evidently, they thought that man was Mathias Ometu, 33, who was seen walking out of an apartment complex as officers responded to the call that involved an assault.
And per usual, officers told Ometu that they had “reasonable suspicion” to believe he fit the description of the man who allegedly strangled someone in a family violence incident, the police report stated.
The police said Ometu refused to give his name and birthday after several requests to do so, and his “demeanor became aggressive.” Police are seen forcefully putting Ometu in the police car after he refused to get inside on his own. The report said it was a “long struggle” and that they only used “open hand techniques.”
Ometu is accused of kicking two officers and hitting one in the face. But then there was a twist of events after the family involved in the domestic dispute came forward and told police Ometu was not the suspect, but then, Ometu still refused to provide authorities with his information.
The San Antonio Police Department arrested and charged him with two counts of assault on a peace officer.
The video was filmed by witnesses Jenny Rodriguez and Victor Mass, both saw the incident and told CNN Ometu did not seem aggressive or confrontational towards the officers. And the video which supports their claims. Ometu is seen calmly handcuffed and standing next to the patrol car for six minutes, but then two officers start to push him into the vehicle, they are seen struggling with Ometu as they try to get him into the vehicle. Ometu can be heard saying several times, “You’re choking me!”
Notably, one officer involved was also black.
Maas told the outlet that the police used Tasers on Ometu, but the video does not show this.
As of now, Ometu has posted bond, and the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office is waiting on law enforcement to complete its investigation.
Once the investigation is complete, the district attorney’s office will “review all evidence and decide how to proceed with any potential criminal case,” Gonzales said.
CNN was unable to make contact with Ometu or his family for comment.
