Monday evening, a bullet from a street shootout went through a window and two walls before striking a sleeping 1-year-old in the head.
“Zyiker Young should not be dead,” Pittsburgh police Chief Scott Schubert said. “My heart breaks for the family. I can’t even imagine what they’re going through today with the loss of their child. It’s senseless.”
When Pittsburgh officers arrived at the scene of the shootout, they were pointed in the direction of the injured child.
According to People, two officers held the infant in the backseat trying to control the bleeding while a sergeant drove the victim to the hospital. It was not too soon after their arrival that Young was pronounced dead.
“Words cannot explain our grief at this moment,” the baby’s family said in a statement.
This is a very active investigation. While no arrests have been made, there is one possible suspect and numerous of witnesses. The police are asking for their help.
“This is an innocent, innocent baby,” Commander Victor Joseph said. Young’s death “really tugs on the emotional heartstrings of everybody, and if people can’t rally around and support this investigation and give information here — this is a baby.”
