Mariah Carey Says She Was “Uncomfortable” During Interview About Pregnancy Rumors With Ellen DeGeneres

Mariah Carey opens up about her “uncomfortable” pregnancy interview with Ellen DeGeneres.

Earlier this summer, a video clip from 2008 resurfaced online that featured DeGeneres trying to get Carey to share details about her possible pregnancy. The interview seemingly took a left turn when DeGeneres challenged Carey to drink some champagne as a way to make all the rumors go away. “I can’t believe you did this to me, Ellen,” said Carey in the clip. In response, DeGeneres said, “Let’s toast to you not being pregnant if you’re not pregnant.”

In a new interview, Carey said that the moment made her uncomfortable due to her previous health issues with pregnancy. “I was extremely uncomfortable with that moment is all I can say. And I really have had a hard time grappling with the aftermath,” Carey said to news outlet Vulture. ”I wasn’t ready to tell anyone because I had had a miscarriage. I don’t want to throw anyone that’s already being thrown under any proverbial bus, but I didn’t enjoy that moment.”

Carey went on to say that there’s “an empathy that can be applied to those moments that I would have liked to have been implemented. But what am I supposed to do? It’s like, [sings] ‘What are you going to do?’” A few years later, Carey became the mother of twins, Monroe and Moroccan, in 2011. When she announced her pregnancy in 2010, she revealed that she had endured a miscarriage two years earlier. She also came back to the show five times following the 2008 interview, E! Online reports.

The resurfaced clip came up amid DeGeneres’ current work misconduct drama, in which the host has been accused of having a toxic work environment.

“On day one of our show, I told everyone in our first meeting that The Ellen DeGeneres Show would be a place of happiness—no one would ever raise their voice, and everyone would be treated with respect,” she wrote in her July statement to employees. “Obviously, something changed, and I am disappointed to learn that this has not been the case. And for that, I am sorry. Anyone who knows me knows it’s the opposite of what I believe and what I hoped for our show.”

Since then, Stephen “tWitch” Boss has been promoted to co-executive producer, and employees have been given additional benefits that will launch at the beginning of the next season in September.
