A registered sex offender has been arrested and charged for the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Kyan King, who was allegedly seen running away from him in the nude over the weekend.
According to Daily Mail, Orlando Durate, 45, is facing felony counts of criminal homicide and prohibited possession of a firearm in connection to the murder.
The incident occurred on Saturday around 1 pm in the Allison Hill section of Harrisburg.
Witnesses told police that prior to the boy’s death, he said that he had been raped and that his rapist was trying to kill him.
Harrisburg residents said they saw the teen running down the street naked, as an armed man followed on foot. The man then fired several shots at the boy, who was heard screaming for help.
After a witness called to report the shooting, King was found with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest. He was then rushed to the hospital, where he later died.
Duarte fled the scene but was later apprehended after a short chase.
According to the Daily Mail, Sergeant Kyle Gautsch of the Harrisburg Police Department said Duarte and King knew each other, and that Duarte allegedly claimed that he thought King was 18.
“Our understanding, this wasn’t just a happenstance incident where he was pulled off the street. We are under the impression and understanding that they did know each other. They were acquaintances,” Gautsch said during a press conference.
According to PennLIve, upon a search of Duarte’s apartment, officials reportedly found a note written in King’s handwriting that read, “If you’re reading this, I’m dead.”
They also found sandals near the back door, which looked like someone had run out of them.
Duarte’s sex offender registration came as part of his 2012 conviction on charges of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, aggravated indecent assault of a child, aggravated indecent assault without consent, indecent assault of a person less than 13, unlawful contact with a minor and corruption of minors after he was found guilty of sexually assaulting a girl under the age of 9. He was released in 2018, after a six-year bid.
