Police are questioning a 30-year-old homeless man who caused a New York City subway train to derail early this morning, causing major delays in service.
The first subway car derailed and sideswiped seven metal columns and was heavily damaged. Three hundred feet of the third rail collapsed, causing a power outage to all four tracks in the station. Additionally, another 200 feet of tracks were also heavily damaged.
Thirty people were evacuated from the train by first responders. Three passengers were injured in the crash, one refused medical attention, one was treated at the scene, and another was taken to Bellevue Hospital, according to the New York Daily News.
Witnesses say the suspect was seen laughing at his handiwork. He was held at the station by Good Samaritans until police officers were able to detain him. No charges were immediately filed, the publication reports.
The crash caused major delays for commuters throughout Manhattan.
