“Drastic penalties are required to help further protect children from serious crime,” said Governor Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai, of Nigeria’s Kaduna state.
The governor has added a drastic-but reasonable measure against sexual predators by enacting the novel law that will enforce surgical castration on convicted rapists and the death penalty on those who victimize children under the age of 14.
On Wednesday, el-Rufai signed the new law, which also increased the maximum prison sentence from a 21-year maximum for the rape of an adult and life in prison for the rape of a child.
The two-page amendment signed and posted on Twitter on September 11, outlines the new law that will punish men convicted of raping children under the age of 14 with surgical castration and death. If a woman is convicted her raping a child, she will be punished with bilateral salpingectomy or the removal of her fallopian tubes, as well as death.
Nigeria enacted the law two days after Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan suggested surgical castration as a form of punishment after a gang of men raped a woman who ran out of gas along a deserted highway in the country’s Punjab province.
Last year in the U.S., Alabama Republican Governor Kay Ivey signed a law that ordered “chemical castration” as a punishment for convicted child molesters as a condition of parole, Fox News reports. “This bill is a step toward protecting children in the state.
The law would also require sex offenders of victims under the age of 13 to take medication to lower their testosterone levels and sex drive. A punishment that is shared by seven other U.S. states; apparently it is never used due to the high controversy behind it.
