On Monday, President Donald Trump spoke via telephone with Fox & Friends and announced that he’d be revealing his nominee to fill Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat on Friday or Saturday.
Trump said that he would like to wait until the services for RBG are over.
The announcement comes despite Ginsburg’s dying wish that her seat be filled after the election in November.
“My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed,” she told her granddaughter on her deathbed.
However, Trump seems to think that she would be ok with him filling her seat and that her dying wish is just another Democratic hoax. “I don’t know that she said that, or was that written out by Adam Schiff and [Chuck] Schumer and [Nancy] Pelosi. I would be more inclined to the second… But that sounds like a Schumer deal or maybe a Pelosi or Shifty Schiff. So that came out of the wind,” he said during his appearance.
Republicans stand in stark contrast to their position in 2016 on filling a supreme court justice position during an election year. Republicans blocked Merrick Garland’s confirmation, Obama’s pick to replace the late Antonin Scalia, a mere nine months before the 2016 election, saying that the new president should fill the vacant seat.
