Police have arrested a suspect in the hate crime attack on a Black jogger in Queens, New York.
According to the NYPD, a 53 year old woman was arrested and charged inside her Woodside home on Monday morning with second degree assault and attempted aggravated harassment. The charges are allegations, and she has not been convicted.
Last week, the NYPD released surveillance video of the August 17 incident near 53rd Place and Broadway. The video shows a woman walking on the sidewalk as a Black woman jogs around the corner. The woman on the sidewalk is then seen yelling something at the jogger before throwing a glass bottle. The NYPD Hate Crimes account announced the arrest on Twitter on Monday.
The jogger, Tiffany, was startled at first but kept running. Police say she was not hurt, but she told authorities the woman shouted racial slurs at her.
Tiffany told NBC New York she was worried for her safety and decided that walking away was the easiest way to protect herself. She said the woman followed her and that bystanders became upset, adding that one person even threw a bagel in the woman’s direction. The surveillance video did not capture that part of the encounter.
The incident happened during what was supposed to be a 5 kilometer run. Tiffany said she runs several times a week and was glad the incident was caught on video so she could take it to police.
Neighbors in the area told reporters they recognized the woman from the video, and she was later identified. It was not immediately clear whether she has an attorney who could comment on the charges.
