A Republican lawmaker in Kentucky has been indicted on assault charges for reportedly strangling a woman with an ethernet cable.
Rep. Robert S. Goforth, 44, was indicted on Friday on one count of assault and one count of first-degree strangulation after an incident in April.
He was arrested around 3 a.m. on April 21 after a woman showed up to the 911 dispatch center claiming to have been struck in the face by Goforth. The officer noticed the woman had a bruise on her forehead and marks on her neck and arms.
She claimed the altercation started after she refused to unlock her phone for Goforth. The unnamed woman said that she was finally able to leave the home after promising to unlock it.
She also claimed that Goforth threatened to kill her before grabbing an ethernet cable while she was face down and strangling her with it. She said she thought she was going to pass out.
Once she promised to unlock her phone, the woman was able to leave the home and get help and filed paperwork for an Emergency Protective Order.
According to reports, there were three children at the house at the time of the incident.

Officers found the three children safe in the house when they arrived and arrested Goforth. He was held in the Laurel County Correctional Center before being released on $25,000 bond.
Goforth, who was first elected in 2018, was arraigned June 1, where he pleaded not guilty.
State representatives are now calling on Goforth to resign, and if he doesn’t, they are prepared to push him out.
