Lilian White, an art teacher at Great Hearts Texas in San Antonio, was fired after ignoring requests to remove her Black Lives Matter face mask.
The Texas teacher began wearing a “Black Lives Matter” and “Silence is Violence” mask to support her black students and fellow faculty members.
After two-weeks and despite students not being on campus, White was asked by a school official to stop wearing the controversial masks.
“We don’t discuss the current political climate on campus. Parents will start coming around more,” Heath Molder, the school’s assistant headmaster, sent in a text to White.
According to the Great Heart Texas Superintendent, Daniel Scoggin, the school prohibits faculty from displaying messages on their face mask.
But, White did not care. She felt compelled to act according to her values as she hoped “to “advocate for an anti-racism action plan and a more diverse curriculum.”
“This is a human rights issue,” White said. “I did it for my students who experience racial injustice in school. I refused to back down.”
White continued to say, “if you’re scared about what parents are going to say because a teacher is supporting equal rights, you need to reevaluate the kind of people you’re catering to. By staying silent, Great Hearts is only supporting racist parents.”
Days before students returned to campus, White received news that her employment was terminated.
Though some faculty members asked her to make them their own Black Lives Matter masks, none stood in her defense or joined her fight upon her termination.
Scoggin guaranteed the decision was regarding policy, not the Black community.
“We stand with the Black community and all who are suffering,” he said. “Great Hearts deplores bigotry and its crushing effects on all those subjected to it. Great Hearts is committed to an America where racism, violence, and injustice do not happen.”
According to CNN, White has no plans to appeal her termination. But, she has started a petition demanding Great Hearts to adopt an anti-racism action plan.
