People who call themselves Christians have raised more than $500,000 for Kyle Rittenhouse’s legal defense.

Apparently, some people believe the 17-year-old Illinois native “bravely tried to defend his community” when he fatally shot two people while harassing demonstrators in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Aug. 23. Now, self-proclaimed “Christians” are clicking a “pray now” button on the “No. 1 free Christian fundraising site,” GiveSendGo, to raise money for the domestic terrorist’s legal defense.

Rittenhouse was charged with first-degree intentional homicide after shooting and killing two people, according to Complex Media. On the fundraiser that has now reached over $500,000 in donations, some of the comments read, “May God be with you,” “You are in our prayers,” “The kid is a patriot.” Another said, “F*ck around and find out.” The original goal was $500,000, but now the fundraiser has been listed at  $524,145.

Other charges against Rittenhouse include first-degree reckless homicide, two counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, attempted first-degree intentional homicide, and possession of a dangerous weapon by a person under 18, Complex reports. The shootings occurred following the police shooting of #JacobBlake. Rittenhouse traveled to Wisconsin armed with a Smith & Wesson AR-15-style .223 caliber rifle.

In the wake of the donations, the “Christian” group has received major backlash online, with many questioning the group’s comprehension of Christianity. “Many Christians’ love of guns and white supremacist terrorism is mind-boggling. Where are the biblical passages supporting guns and racism? Don’t be fooled into believing in the moral supremacy of Christians,” one Twitter user wrote.

Another user wrote: “Remember those crowds of smiling White folk in lynching photos? Those were mostly “Christians”. Lynchings were announced during church service & churchgoers left the pews to attend lynchings, now they get to live vicariously. That’s American Christianity for you.”
