To honor George Floyd, a mural will be unveiled in his hometown just in time for his birthday.
On Monday, a special ceremony featuring Floyd’s family, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner to showcase the mural that is being painted in the Houston neighborhood where Floyd grew up, TMZ reports.
A local artist by the name of Ange is the creator of the mural. He was asked by Floyd’s family to create the artwork in August after he presented a prior piece to the family at Floyd’s funeral.
The mural is showcased on a well outside a neighborhood convenience store that Floyd patronized. The business is a staple of the area, and therefore a lot of people will see and remember Floyd.
Earlier this year, Floyd was killed by a white officer who kneeled his knee into Floyd’s neck for 9 minutes. He would have turned 47 on Wednesday. The mural is intended to celebrate his birthday and inspire people to “be the change” and vote.
Floyd’s brother Philonise says the art piece is supposed to deliver the message, “People in my family all feel that George can’t vote, so everybody needs to get out for George, for Breonna for Ahmaud.”
“He said he wanted to change the world, so here’s how we do it. By being the change,” the family added.
