A 19 year old woman has died more than a year after suffering a cardiac arrest during a breast enhancement surgery, according to AsAmNews and local reports.
Emmalyn had been in a coma and later a semi conscious state since her surgery in August 2019. She lived in a nursing home in recent months and developed pneumonia, which led to cardiac arrest in early October. She died on Oct. 4, according to reports.
Her parents had filed a lawsuit against plastic surgeon Dr. Geoffrey and nurse anesthetist Rex, alleging gross negligence. According to the suit, Emmalyn was given anesthesia and then left unobserved for about 15 minutes, during which she stopped breathing and went into cardiac arrest.
The family’s attorney, David Woodruff, told People last year that staff reportedly attempted CPR twice and waited more than five hours to call 911. He also said her parents were not immediately told what happened. These are allegations from the family’s side.
Representatives for both defendants told People that they deny the claims in the lawsuit.
Reports say Dr. Geoffrey’s license was initially suspended but was later restored under a three year probation after an agreement with state regulators, and that Rex agreed not to administer anesthesia. Her father said the family found the probation unfair.
Following her death, the family’s attorney said the lawsuit will become a wrongful death claim. He said her parents want to tell Emmalyn’s story to seek justice for her and to help prevent the same thing from happening to another patient.
