A month after reports revealed that rapper Bobby Shmurda was denied release during his parole hearing, court documents are now revealing why.

In September, TMZ stated that the rapper’s release was denied by board members after mentioning that he’s had “multiple” offenses in jail, including possessing a shank, fighting, and drug possession.

Before the parole board’s decision, Shmurda had stated his case as to why he should be freed early, Complex reports. He stated that he no longer had impulsive behavior, thinks about others when making decisions, and turns away from bad situations when they arise. After he informed the board that would like to return to rapping once he’s released and become a part of programs dedicated to working with troubled kids, he mentioned that he views himself now as a “leader” instead of a follower.

He also added that he will like to earn a high school G.E.D. once he’s freed.

The young rapper explained to the members that in his youth, Shmurda got into trouble because he assumed his peers would view him as a punk if he didn’t get into altercations. Now, he believes that he has matured beyond his old ways.

However, the board did not appear to convince that the rapper is completely changed and now requires him to serve out his entire sentence.

“Following his Sept. 15, 2020 interview with the Board of Parole, Ackquille Pollard was denied release and given a hold until the maximum expiration of his sentence on December 11, 2021,” a spokesperson from the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision told reports in September.
