In Matthew McConaughey’s new memoir, Greenlights, the actor writes about wanting to shift his career to more dramatic roles after performing in romantic comedies during the early 2000s.

“If I couldn’t do what I wanted, I wasn’t going to do what I didn’t, no matter the price,” McConaughey wrote.

According to IndieWire, Mcconaughey wrote that romantic comedies remained his only consistent box office hits, which made them his only consistent offers.

McConaughey starred in How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days, The Wedding Planner, and Failure To Launch.

In the book, McConaughey recalled calling his accountant and asking how long he could go without working.

“It was time to make a change, to pivot, to make a new commitment,” he wrote.

After two years chanting the motto, “Fuck the bucks,” McConaughey was offered a role in The Lincoln Lawyer.

McConaughey won an Oscar for Best Actor and a Golden Globe for his role in Dallas Buyers Club.

Greenlights is now available in bookstores.

McCaughey is doing a virtual book tour consisting of conversations with some of his former co-stars – Kate Hudson, Woody Harrelson, Reese Witherspoon, Ethan Hawke, and Idris Elba.
