Back in April it was announced that four-time Olympic gold medalist Sanya Richards–Ross would retire after the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. However, it looks like she’s made the decision to call upon retirement a bit earlier than expected.
Richards-Ross’ hamstring gave out at the U.S. Olympic trials Friday, causing her to fall short in a 400 meter qualifier. It was then that she announced she would be retiring. “To be able to run half a victory lap at Hayward Field was pretty special,” Richards-Ross told reporters following her announcement. “I’m so grateful…. to have my last race here at Hayward field.”
Richards-Ross won Olympic gold in the 4×400 meter relay at the 2004 Summer Olympics, the 2008 Summer Olympics, and the 2012 Summer Olympics. She also won gold at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the 400 meter dash.
Sanya Richards-Ross is a huge inspiration to athletes, especially female athletes. The world of track and field will definitely miss her.
