A Mexican journalist was shot Monday just moments before he was about to go live on air. He died in a hospital later the same day.
According to CNN, Israel Vázquez, 31, covered a story on the “discovery of human remains” for digital news outlet El Salmantino at the time of the shooting. It happened in the city of Salamanca, which is located in the state of Guanajuato.
The attorney general said Vázquez’s death remains under investigation, and no arrests have been made.
“Today, our colleague, Israel Vázquez, while working as a reporter, was the target of a vile and cowardly attack that took his life,” El Salmantino posted to Facebook. “All of us who work at El Salmantino condemn not just this one attack, but all of those that occur daily in the city of Salamanca.”
Both the governor of Guanajuato and the municipal government of Salamanca condemned the attack on Twitter. An official for the municipal government called for action from the attorney general and the state government.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, this was the third journalist killed in Mexico in less than a month. Nine have been killed overall this year. Mexico is one of the most dangerous countries in the world in which to be a journalist.
