All-Star guard Chris Paul is headed to the Phoenix Suns in a blockbuster trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
According to ESPN, in exchange for Paul, 35, and Abdel Nader, the Thunder get Kelly Oubre Jr., Ricky Rubio, Tyler Jerome, Jalen Lecque, and a 2022 first-round draft pick. The move is part of a rebuilding effort for the Thunder. After a series of trades, the team has up to 17 future first-round draft picks between the 2020 and 2026 drafts.
Adding the future Hall of Fame guard to their roster, alongside Devin Booker and DeAndre Ayton, the Suns are undoubtedly looking to make a run for the playoffs in the upcoming season. The Suns are coming off an impressive 8-0 run in the bubble, giving them momentum going into the new season.
“We are excited to welcome Chris Paul and Abdel Nader to Phoenix,” said Suns general manager James Jones in a statement. “Chris’ leadership and competitive approach to the game will have an immeasurable impact on our team. Abdel possesses all the traits on and off the court that will complement our culture.”
Paul had a bounce-back season with Oklahoma, leading the team’s young players to the playoffs. He made the All-Star Game and was named to an All-NBA team, both for the first time since 2016. Paul averaged 17.6 points, 6.7 assists, and 5.0 rebounds last season.
