A Chicago Ph.D. student has been charged with second degree murder in the fatal shooting of a man she had dated, police in Washington, DC said.
On Saturday, 37 year old Nijinsky, a criminology student at the University of Illinois Chicago, was charged in the death of 44 year old Terry. Police responded to reports of gunfire at an apartment complex in the nation’s capital shortly before 5:30 p.m. and said they found Nijinsky kneeling beside Terry, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said she was holding a gun and was ordered to put it down.
The Chicago Tribune reported that Nijinsky was on the phone with her mother at the time, and that her mother told officers her daughter said Terry had pushed her and she had shot him. Nijinsky was taken to a hospital, where she reported memory loss and back pain, but the report said she showed no signs of being assaulted.
Terry’s family told authorities the two had dated for about three months before breaking up in May, and claimed Nijinsky began stalking him after the split. Those are the family’s claims, and early reports did not include a response from Nijinsky.
It was unclear why she was in Washington, DC. According to the schools, she was pursuing a doctorate in criminology, law and justice in Chicago while working at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, as director of a talent search program. Notre Dame said it was aware of her arrest and would cooperate with law enforcement as appropriate.
A charge is an allegation, and Nijinsky is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
