Amazon’s Utopia was projected to last year’s, but The Gillian Flynn-produced drama series has been canceled after just one season.
The show, which revolves around a group of comic book fanatics in a pandemic, “was not met with warm reviews,” The Hollywood Reporter (THR) said. TV critic Inkoo Kang described the series as “too hackneyed to be timely, too grim to be escapist.”
THR stated that among critics, “The series has a 51 percent rating on RottenTomatoes.com and, perhaps in a sign of a failure to cut through, does not have an audience score.”
The drama, which launched on Sept. 25, was originally developed in 2014 and was set to air on HBO under David Fincher. But, for unknown reasons, Flynn eventually moved to Amazon, leaving Fincher behind.
This nine-episode series was Flynn’s debut as a showrunner.
I guess, “Utopia isn’t so utopian,” THR says.
