As Trump and his administration come to terms with the inevitable truth about his election loss. Now comes word that the Celebrity-In-Chief has discussed with his advisers the possibility of preemptively pardoning his three eldest children Eric, Donald Jr., and White House advisor Ivanka Trump as well as his son-in-law, White House senior adviser Jared Kushner, and his personal attorney Rudy Giuliani.
According to ABC News, Trump has allegedly expressed concerns that the Justice Department under President-elect Joe Biden will prosecute his three eldest children in an attempt at “seeking retribution.”
Trump is reportedly concerned that attempting to pardon himself and his family for crimes they have not yet been accused of will look a lot like a preemptive admission of guilt. Complicating matters, even more is that the pardons have more functional legal heft if they are specific in their outlining of any potential deeds for which the preemptive pardon would cover.
Some of the bevies of criminal shenanigans to be considered include Donald Jr.’s role as a key player in obtaining Russian information on Hillary Clinton. Kushner’s role as a conduit between Trump and deeply questionable foreign entities. The shady business dealings of the Trump Organization. And Trump’s taxes, which are also chock full of legally questionable moves.
The New York Times first broke the story of the discussions and said Trump is pondering whether to grant pre-emptive pardons for his family. The Times reported that Trump spoke to Giuliani about his proposed pardon as recently as last week. Still, Giuliani denied that the conversation ever took place, in a statement to NBC News, calling it “a Lie.”
Last week, Trump granted a “full pardon” to his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, who twice pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI. That pardon came as no surprise since Trump revealed in March he was “strongly considering” pardoning Flynn.
