On Wednesday, Hunter Biden stepped forward to let the public know that he’s under a federal investigation surrounding possible tax fraud claims, the New York Post reports.
The Justice Department is looking into the claims against President-elect Joe Biden’s son, which seeks to examine his overseas business dealings. Authorities will look into Hunter Biden’s laptop, which is said to have correspondences and documents on some of his business affairs conducted in China and Ukraine. The dealings are said to involve transactions with others who questioned counterintelligence concerns.
“I learned yesterday for the first time that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Delaware advised my legal counsel, also yesterday, that they are investigating my tax affairs,” Hunter Biden said in the statement.
“I take this matter very seriously, but I am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will demonstrate that I handled my affairs legally and appropriately, including with the benefit of professional tax advisors,” the 53-year-old announced regarding the investigation through a statement released by his father’s presidential transition office.
The statement also included a message on behalf of his father, “President-elect Biden is deeply proud of his son, who has fought through difficult challenges, including the vicious personal attacks of recent months, only to emerge stronger.”
Authorities want to know if Hunter and his business associates abused several tax and money laundering laws, CNN reports.
The Department of Justice said they postponed the investigations so that it would not influence the outcome of the election; as a result, Hunter Biden’s investigation was placed on hold. But now that the election is over, the department has decided to resume its probe with the help of the FBI and the IRS, who have sent out subpoenas and request interviews of those knowledgeable on the situation.
Republicans called Hunter’s business affairs to the forefront in September, claiming that he and his family “were involved in a vast financial network that connected them to foreign nationals and foreign governments across the globe.”
In the report released by the senators, they also stated that the ties also “raise criminal financial, counterintelligence and extortion concerns,”
Wednesday marked the one year anniversary of the launch of the federal investigation. The FBI was tipped off by a Delaware computer shop who said Hunter Biden never returned to pick up a laptop he left behind.
It was in October that the Post released an exclusive article claiming that the computer’s hard drive was copied, and a 2015 email was found on it. The email supposedly states that Hunter introduced his father to a top executive of Burisma—
a Ukrainian energy company, where he was a board member at the time, making $83,000 a month.
It’s been reported that the elder Biden was the influence behind a Ukrainian official’s termination after trying to investigate Burisma. A move he says was done to get Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin thrown out because of corruption concerns.
There are also issues with other emails that reveal Hunter looked into other lucrative dealings with China’s largest private energy company. Emails that appear to paint Joe Biden has knowledgeable about what his son was doing.
However, during an October presidential debate, Biden claimed he was innocent of wrongdoing. “I have not taken a penny from any foreign source ever in my life.”
Outside of politics, Hunter Biden’s laptop also contained several sexually explicit images, along with a 12-minute video of what appears to be him smoking crack while having a sexual encounter with an undisclosed woman.
