A former Eastern Michigan University student says a professor sent her unwanted explicit messages, and she has filed notice that she intends to sue the school, according to FOX 2 Detroit.
Destinee says she emailed the 65 year old professor in June 2020 to ask for a letter of recommendation. She says she then received unwelcome replies from his university email account in August, including an explicit image and a message asking her to send explicit images of herself.
Destinee says she reported the emails to the university’s Title IX coordinator right away, but as of December 8, 2020 she had not heard back about an investigation. She says the professor is still employed by the school. Her notice of intent to sue accuses the university of sexism and racial discrimination.
She has hired Detroit attorneys Maurice Davis and Jasmin Rand. “I hired my attorneys to fight for me and the other women that this professor has most likely victimized,” she said in a statement. “I refuse to remain silent while this man is still employed.”
Her attorneys say the university has the emails on its own email server and should have all it needs to act. They also claim this was not the first time the professor sent explicit images to a student, and they are encouraging other women to come forward and join the case.
These are allegations only. The professor has not been named in reports, and neither he nor the university had publicly responded to the claims at the time of this report.
