New York State Police say longtime New Yorker cartoonist Danny Shanahan has been arrested on a felony charge.
Shanahan, 64, whose work has appeared in the magazine since the 1990s, was arrested on Wednesday by the New York State Police and the Rhinebeck Police Department. He is charged with one count of possessing a sexual performance by a child, a Class E felony. According to the Daily Voice, police say the case is still under investigation.
State Police Trooper AJ Hicks said investigators found evidence on a computer after Rhinebeck police obtained a search warrant. Reports say the charge carries a maximum sentence of four years in prison, though probation is also possible.
Shanahan is scheduled to appear before a judge on January 20. A charge is an accusation, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. At the time of this report, no response from Shanahan had been published.
