A Texas family has been left reeling after the senseless murders of two teenage brothers who were shot and killed while sitting in a parked car.
Police received a phone call on Saturday night at approximately 8:04 p.m. about multiple people suffering from gunshot wounds in the driveway of a home in Rosharon, Texas. When authorities arrived, they found 17-year-old Jonathan Massey and his 15-year-old younger brother Devin Massey dead inside the vehicle parked in the driveway. Another male victim was in the vehicle and suffered serious injuries. He is said to be in stable condition after being taken to a local hospital.
According to PEOPLE, a witness suggested that multiple masked suspects approached the three young men in the car and began exchanging gunfire with them before fleeing on foot. However, it is unclear exactly who in the car had a weapon. According to Fort Bend County Sheriff’s County public information officer Caitilin Espinosa, police did detain one individual at the scene but later released them.
Rebekah Foley, a family friend of the brothers, revealed to ABC13 that the two “had just come home from the grocery store” when they were ambushed.
“This was just a random act of violence,” Foley said. “They had no chance.”
Jonathan was a junior at Ridge Point High School. Devin was only in his freshman year.
In a statement to KPRC-TV, the teens’ parents called the murders “senseless and cruel.”
In their statement, the family also asked the gunmen to surrender to authorities.
“As Christians, we ask for prayers and unity. As humans, we ask the gunmen to please turn to God and turn yourself in to police. Get this off your chest before judgment day.”
