San Francisco School May Remove Lincoln’s Name From School; Didn’t Show “Black Lives Mattered” To Him

A high school in San Francisco may have its name changed because the person who it’s named after didn’t demonstrate “Black Lives Matter.”

A San Francisco committee is looking into Lincoln High School’s name change because he didn’t demonstrate that “Black Lives Mattered,” the KUSI News reported.

The San Francisco School Names Advisory Committee has proposed removing former president Abraham Lincoln’s name from the high school also because of his treatment of Native Americans, Fox News reports.

Although Lincoln abolished slavery, the committee says he is “one of dozens of historical figures who the city school district’s renaming committee argued led lives so rife with racism, oppression or abuse that their names should not grace its buildings.”

Of course, soon-to-be-former White House resident Donald Trump had something to say. He slammed the school in a tweet for trying to rid the 16th president’s name.

The committee is looking over criteria that would help remove historical figures from the list of school names—if they owned slaves, were racist, or involved in white supremacy. It’s about time someone stepped up to take down people who were directly involved in colonization and the violation of others’ human rights.

Although some people like to speak of Lincoln as a hero, he also owned slaves and mistreated Native Americans. Jeremiah Jeffries is the committee’s chairman and has been vocal about his disdain for schools and similar institutions sharing their name with people like Lincoln.

“The discussion for Lincoln centered around his treatment of First Nation peoples because that was offered first,” Jeffries told the Chronicle in an article published Monday. “Once he met criteria in that way, we did not belabor the point.”

“[t]he history of Lincoln and Native Americans is complicated, not nearly as well known as that of the Civil War and slavery.”

“Lincoln, like the presidents before him and most after, did not show through policy or rhetoric that Black lives ever mattered to them outside of human capital and as casualties of wealth building,” he added.
Only time will tell what happens next.

Other schools are also part of this recommendation, including George Washington High School, Herbert Hoover Middle School, and Paul Revere K-8.
