On his 21st birthday, a young man received a gift for his father, who passed away six years ago, that he will cherish forever.
Before passing away from esophageal cancer, John Goodman has planned for his son Matt Goodman to be gifted a $10 bill to purchase his first beer, a surprise only his mom and sister knew.
On December 6, Matt received that gift.
Matt used the 10 dollars left by his father to buy his first alcoholic drink.
“It was probably the best present I’ve ever gotten,” Goodman told CNN.
“Knowing that he thought about a future big moment in my life meant everything, because even being gone, he still did whatever he could to make my 21st birthday.”
John was his son’s best friend and his number one fan. Before his passing, he made sure that he was present for every special moment and heartbreak in his son’s life; and he made sure to continue to do so long after.
“Not having him around has obviously been the toughest thing in my life since he was my best friend,” said Goodman. “He was a huge goofball that would do anything in the world to make me happy.”
After drinking his first beer, Matt shared his heartfelt story on Twitter, receiving over 500,000 likes.
Alongside a photo of the 10 dollars and him drinking the beer, Matt captioned:
“Cheers pops havin’ this one for you!”

The tweet soon went viral and caught the attention of the beer company Budweiser, who delivered eight cases of beer to Matt.
“We’re raising one to your pops, Matt. He got your first beer, and the next one’s on us,” Budweiser tweeted in response to Goodman’s post.
