The family of an 18 year old from Georgia who was sentenced to prison in the Cayman Islands for breaking COVID quarantine rules is asking President Trump to help bring her home, according to NBC News.
NBC News reported that Skylar, a pre med student, pleaded guilty to violating the island’s mandatory 14 day isolation rules for visitors and was sentenced to four months in prison. She had traveled to the Cayman Islands to see her boyfriend, Vanjae, 24, who was there for a jet ski competition. Reports say she isolated for two days, then removed her tracking device and left isolation. Skylar has said she tested negative for the coronavirus twice before leaving.
Her grandmother, Jeanne, spoke with the Today show on Monday. She said Skylar admits she made a mistake and wants to come home, and described her as very distraught. The family has appealed directly to the president, and NBC reported that his office replied that the case would be forwarded to the appropriate federal agency, likely the State Department.
The attorney representing Skylar and Vanjae said four months in prison would have a particularly harsh effect on her. The Cayman Compass reported earlier in the week that the couple were appealing their sentences.
