A bride who faked having cancer for wedding donations has been sent to jail.
When you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes. That’s what Toni Standen is learning, as she’s spent the last five months in a U.K. jail for lying about being terminally ill with cancer and scamming her friends, family, and even her now-husband out of thousands of dollars.
The Chester Magistrate sentenced the woman to jail, according to The Sun. During Standen’s sentencing, District Judge Nicholas Sanders said, “Thankfully it’s not often this court has to sentence someone who has shown such a degree of shamelessness, such greed, or such a betrayal of friendship as you did to your friends and the wider community. You made up an illness to gain the sympathy of your friends and sat back and watched as they raised money to support you,” The Sun reports.
He continued, “You continued to embellish that tissue of lies, telling those same friends on one occasion that you only had weeks to live. I don’t accept what’s said that having started you simply couldn’t stop.”
While Standen may have been faking the funk, victims of her plot say they genuinely were heartbroken over the news of her being ill. In the months leading up to her wedding, Standen began claiming that she had terminal cancer. She even shaved her head to make her story seem real. But it was all a ploy she put together to receive wedding donations.
But her lies started to reveal themselves at her wedding when people started to question why she had so much energy for someone who was suffering from cancer. The woman came clean and admitted that she didn’t have cancer but was infected with coronavirus, Fox News reports.
Standen scammed her friends and family out of $11,000.
