Two women in Newark, New Jersey, were arrested after police say they hosted more than 200 people at an illegal makeshift bar during the pandemic.
According to authorities, Denisse, 26, and Katherine, 28, hosted the gathering over the weekend at a warehouse on Libella Court. Reports say hundreds of people were seen drinking, eating and gambling. Police responded after several calls and arrived around midnight on Sunday.
Police said neither woman could provide a liquor license. They were charged with maintaining an illegal alcohol establishment and with illegal possession and sale of alcohol. The charges are allegations, and it was not clear whether either woman had responded publicly.
NBC News reported that three other people were arrested on Saturday for allegedly selling alcohol without a permit inside a hookah lounge with more than 50 people in attendance, about 20 minutes north of Newark.
