‘Contagion’ Director Says He Will Be Making A Sequel To The Hit Film; Audiences Reportedly Relate To Film More Amid The Covid-19 Pandemic

Director Steven Soderbergh has announced that he will be making a sequel to his thriller film Contagion. 

The 2011 film was a hit when it was released in theaters, and the Oscar-winning director of the movie says he’s working on the “next iteration,” as fans are relating a lot more to the film since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. During an interview with Josh Horowtiz’s on his Happy Sad Confused podcast, Soderbergh talked about the film while discussing that he will be co-producing the upcoming Oscars.

“I’ve got a project in development that Scott Burns is working with me on, that’s a kind of philosophical sequel to Contagion but in a different context,” Soderbergh said. “You’ll kind of look at the two of them as kind of paired but very different hair colors. So, Scott and I had been talking about, ‘So, what’s the next iteration of a Contagion-type story?’ We have been working on that. We should probably hotfoot it a little bit.”

Back in March, Contagion writer Scott Z. Burns shared how he reached out to the Center of Disease Control (CDC) for film research and said he was shocked that audiences couldn’t believe “how similar” Contagion the globe’s current situation, People reports.

“It’s very upsetting to see people getting sick and dying. The part of me that is a human being is more struck by this than the part of me that is a filmmaker,” he said. “That being said, it has been very strange to me, whether on social media or in conversations with friends, that people will say to me, ‘This is uncanny how similar it is.’”

Burns continued, “And I don’t find it to be that surprising, because the scientists I spoke to, and there were a lot of them, all said that this was a matter of when, not if. So, I guess my feeling as someone who believes in science is that when scientists tell us those things, we would do well to listen.”
