If you’ve ever wanted to own your very own jail, now is your chance. The old Essex County Jail, located in Guildhall, Vermont, is listed on Realtor.com for the low price of $149,000— complete with creepy jail cells.
The historic 2,190 square-foot house used to be the jailer’s residence and has four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and was built back in 1880. The house sits on nearly an acre of land, with a large, private backyard.
According to the listing, attached to the home is the former jail used until 1969. The jail still has prison cells with barred windows and includes the Jailer’s office. The pictures in the listing show the creepy rusted out cells and remains of bathroom fixtures.
Burlington Free Press reports that two inmates escaped from the jail in 1964. The break was discovered when one of the sheriffs who lived in the main house brought breakfast to the jailhouse. According to the outlet, the jail’s use was discontinued in 1969 when the Corrections Department controlled most jails in the state.
While the thought of living in your own personal jail may not be enticing, the house has undergone some renovations to make you feel more at home, including radiant heat floors on the first floor and a new heating system. The kitchen has been updated with stainless steel appliances but retains its historic charm with a replica antique cooking stove.
