Another lawmaker has called for the removal of Donald Trump under the 25th Amendment.
Chuck Schumer, Senate Democratic leader, is demanding that Trump’s Cabinet remove the unhinged President days before Joe Biden is scheduled to take office. His call for removal echoes that of other lawmakers who were appalled by the violence that erupted in the nation’s Capitol, incited by Trump and his unfounded claims of election fraud.
In his statement Thursday, Schumer called the attack on the U.S. Capitol “an insurrection against the United States, incited by the President. This President should not hold office one day longer.” He later added, “If the vice president and the Cabinet refuse to stand up, Congress should reconvene to impeach the president.”
This statement follows that of Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, who has also called for Mike Pence and the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office before he can fuel any further violence.
For those unfamiliar with the 25th Amendment, it grants the Vice President the presidency if the President cannot effectively perform his duties.
