Rescuers searching for the wreckage of an Indonesian passenger plane crashed into the ocean with 62 people on board early Saturday found the plane’s black box flight recorder and its communications data.
According to CNN, The head of Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Commission said the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and Flight Data Recorder (FDR) from Sriwijaya Air Flight 182 were found in two different locations.
Suryanto Cahyono explained that both the CVR and FDR devices transmit intermittent ping signals to a receiver that helps “detect and locate the black boxes.”
Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces, Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto, told reporters they are “receiving two signals from the black box and are continuing to monitor it.” He also added that he hoped to be able to retrieve them from the seabed, 23 meters (approximately 75 feet) below the surface, very soon.
Ten bags containing remains of victims, pieces of clothing, and aircraft debris located by Basarnas have been turned over to the Jakarta-based disaster victim investigation unit so that the process of identification could begin.
