On Tuesday, the FBI announced that it is considering plans to add the rioters from the insurrection at the US Capitol last week to the no-fly list.
CNN reports that FBI Washington Field Office Assistant Director in Charge Steven D’Antuono said the bureau is considering adding rioters to the list, which is maintained by the bureau and the Transportation Security Administration.
“As for the no-fly list, we look at all tools and techniques that we possibly can use within the FBI, and that’s something we are actively looking at,” D’Antuono said.
The list is derived from the FBI’s Terrorist Screening Database, knows as the terrorist watch list. The FBI, and other intelligence agencies, can nominate a person to be included on the list. A person can be appointed to the selectee list, which designates a person as the subject of additional airport screening.
How the lists work, including what qualifies a person for inclusion and how many people are listed, is classified as sensitive security information.
When a person checks in for a flight, the individual’s reservation information is checked against the TSA’s Secure Flight database, including whether the traveler is on the no-fly list or the selectee list.
The database feeds the information the airline needs to issue a boarding pass or deny the passenger. The no-fly list was created following the 9/11 terror attacks before the TSA’s inception.
Congressional leaders have been calling for the rioters to be kept off airplanes amid concerns that they plan on returning to Washington DC.
