Skylar Mack and her boyfriend Vanjae Ramgeet were arrested in Cayman Island for violating COVID-19 protocols. After spending a month in prison, Mack and Ramgeet have been released. Mack, who was supposed to quarantine for 14 days, told Good Morning America that because she tested negative for COVID-19, she thought it was ok to take off her geo-tracking monitor to see her boyfriend compete in a race.

“It was a conscious decision,” Mack told GMA. “I can’t give you any good reason for it. …I had signed the paper.”

“It was a selfish decision. There’s no reason that I can give you to grant me a second chance,” Mack said. ” I don’t expect anybody to ever forgive me, but I would like for them to at least let me be able to show them that I did learn from it.”

Mack, a pre-med student, and Ramgeet, a professional jet skier, were detained and ordered to pay $2,600 in fines and 40 hours of community service. Later, the sentence ascended to two months of jail time.

“He started it 15 months, and I broke down,” Mack said. “It was a very big jump from 40 hours community service to starting at 15 months in jail.”

Mack says that she has learned from her mistakes.

“I would have never been able to live with myself knowing that I could have been the reason that somebody could have even just been sick,” she said. “The action itself was serious, but like how much worse it could have been.”
