The FBI has arrested a Connecticut man accused of assaulting a police officer during the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.
According to NBC News and a criminal complaint filed in federal court in Washington, D.C., Patrick, 23, of Ridgefield, was arrested Tuesday in White Plains, New York. He is charged with assaulting a police officer, civil disorder and unlawful entry. The complaint alleges he used a police riot shield to pin Officer Daniel Hodges against a doorway and told him to “just go home.” It also alleges that another person in the crowd pulled at the officer’s gas mask, and that Patrick struck other officers with the shield.
Video of the encounter, which was later posted online, shows the officer crying out in pain. Prosecutors said the footage clearly identifies Patrick, and federal agents were helped by a tip from the public.
At a hearing on Wednesday, a judge ordered Patrick held without bail. His attorney had asked for $150,000 bail. Patrick has not made a public statement, and the charges are allegations that have not been proven in court.
Acting U.S. Attorney Michael Sherwin said in a statement that anyone who attacked law enforcement at the Capitol will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
