In Tacoma, Washington, a police officer is under investigation after he allegedly drove his vehicle into a crowd of people, running over at least one person and possibly striking others.
According to CNN, the Tacoma Police Department released a statement explaining that the officer, along with other police units, responded to reports of an incident at the intersection of South 9th and Pacific Avenue around 6:20 p.m. yesterday, the release said.
Tacoma Police said the officers found several vehicles on the scene and approximately 100 people blocking the intersection. The cops then began to clear the scene, “for the safety of those gathered and people trying to use the street,” the release said.
The crowd then reportedly surrounded one of the police cars and began hitting the vehicle while its lights and sirens were activated, the police said. According to their statement, the officer inside the SUV tried to reverse his vehicle but couldn’t because of the crowd.
“Fearing for his safety,” the statement from police said, “the officer drove forward striking one individual and may have impacted others, while trying to escape the “unsafe position.” Once the officer felt secure “at a point of safety,” he called for medical aid, the statement claimed.
