One of the rioters who took part in the domestic terrorist attack of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 is willing to speak at Donald Trump‘s impeachment trial.
Remember the shirtless man with his face painted who was wearing a furry hat with horns on it? His name is Jacob Chansley, and he wants to testify at Trump’s upcoming impeachment, his lawyer Albert Watkins says. He added that senators must hear from someone who was encouraged by 45 to incite violence.
Chansley also goes by Jake Angeli, and he calls himself the “QAnon Shaman,” CBS News reports.
Watkins said Chansley was previously “horrendously smitten” by Trump. However, he now feels Trump let him and others down when he refused to grant Chansley and his fellow domestic terrorist buddies a pardon after participating in the insurrection. “He felt like he was betrayed by the president,” Watkins said.
Trump’s trial is set for Feb. 8; Watkins says he hasn’t talked to any senators since offering Chansley as a witness. Chansley and the other mobsters claim they were only following Trump’s directions before the insurrection when Trump delivered a speech in which he encouraged his supporters to fight for what they believe in. “We fight like Hell and if you don’t fight like Hell, you’re not going to have a country any more,” Trump said during his speech.
CBS reports that Chansley hasn’t submitted any plea regarding charges of civil disorder, obstruction of an official proceeding, disorderly conduct in a restricted building, demonstrating in a Capitol building, and other counts. The outlet reports that he has an arraignment hearing scheduled for Friday in Washington, D.C.
