A Florida teenager is now the prime suspect in a mother’s murder.
Fonda Gandy, 41, just celebrated her birthday, and this past Sunday evening, Gandy was fatally shot by a teen boy she was trying to help. According to investigators, the 16-year-old boy allegedly shot Gandy and tried to kill another woman following an argument at Gandy’s Ocoee home. The woman was able to get away. Gandy was taken to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
The boy was arrested on Tuesday after the fatal shooting, People reports. He’d taken off running after the incident, but police eventually found him. He was charged with murder in connection with the death of Gandy.
On a GoFundMe page, Gandy’s son wrote that his mother recently celebrated her birthday and that she was “trying to help” a teen before she died. No details about the assistance she was allegedly trying to give the teen were provided. “My mom was a community mom, always willing to step up and help others,” Mike Scott, 23, wrote on the page.
Scott went on to say in the post that his mother had just come back to Florida after helping him and his family begin their lives in Georgia three months prior. “At 23 years old, I never thought I would be starting the new year with burying my mom,” he wrote. The GoFundMe is on a mission to gain $12,000; it has currently raised $3,400 of its goal.
Gandy’s father referred to his daughter as a sweet and generous person. “It just can’t be real,” Anthony Gandy said. Gandy worked as a manager at Michael’s before her death. “My baby brother just got murdered last year, May. And then my daughter just got murdered at the beginning of the year. It’s unreal,” Anthony said.
Rest in peace, Fonda.
