Two men with ties to the world of competitive cheerleading were arrested this week on separate sex offense charges, USA Today reports.
Robert, 25, was arrested February 3 in Virginia. The Chesterfield County Police Department said he was charged with taking indecent liberties with a minor and using an electronic device to solicit sex, after he allegedly tried to meet a minor. He made a brief appearance on Netflix’s Cheer and is being held without bail. Police asked anyone with more information to contact investigators.
Mitchell, 23, was arrested February 4 by the Coppell Police Department in Dallas County, Texas. He is charged with felony aggravated sexual assault of a child in connection with an incident police say happened in July 2020. He was released on a $50,000 bond Friday morning. He never appeared on the show but was a member of the Navarro College cheer team featured in it.
Mitchell’s attorney, Jeremy Rosenthal, told USA Today, “This has been a nightmare for Mitch and his family. We look forward to Dallas County hearing the truth and this case being over.” The lawyer also told PEOPLE that there are two sides to every story and that they are confident Mitch’s name will be cleared.
The U.S. All Star Federation suspended Robert. Mitchell has not been suspended, though the federation said it has known about the allegations against him since last year.
Both men are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
