In a statement, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection confirmed its officers have confiscated almost 200 pounds of illegal Mexican bologna at the New Mexico/Mexico border.
A Field Operations Agriculture Specialist found the 49-year-old driver from Alburquerque in the trunk of a Nissan Rogue at the Columbus, N.M. port of entry with 22 rolls of bologna (194 pounds), with some of the bologna found in his luggage. The driver was fined $500.
“It is important that travelers understand they should declare all items they are transporting from abroad to avoid fines and penalties,” CBP Columbus Port Director Tony Hall said in the release. “A properly declared prohibited item can be abandoned at the port without consequence.”
