A group of thieves known as “acrobat thieves” used Instagram to plan burglaries of multiple celebrity homes.
BBC reports that the group of four burglars is known as the “acrobat thieves” due to their ability to scale apartment buildings during their burglaries. They ran their operation in Milan, Italy. They allegedly monitored high-profile social media accounts to determine when their targeted celebrities would be away from home. They also used geolocation data in some Instagram posts to figure out exactly where the individuals would be.
The acrobat thieves’ victims include footballer Achraf Hakimi, social media influencer Eleonora Incardona and TV host Diletta Leotta, who lost $180,000 in property. One of the thieves was arrested in January, and the other three were arrested last week. The youngest of the group is just 17-years-old.
During their reign, they managed to steal “nine bags, two belts, five scarves, two earrings, two brooches, a necklace, a bracelet, a wallet, a suitcase, and €1,000 in cash.”
Italian police have obtained CCTV footage of the group scaling an apartment building.
