A wanted man was found inside the wall of his Detroit home after evading police for three years: “You guys got me.”
It’s been three years since Willie Wright has been on the run, but that came to an end last Wednesday when U.S. Marshals captured him in his Detroit east side home. Officials were led onto Wright after receiving a tip about Wright’s location. When they arrived at his home, they found him hiding in a wall. “(He was) just terrorizing the city of Detroit,” said U.S. marshal deputy Aaron Garcia.
Garcia told ABC 7 Detroit that Wright was known for robbing well-known businesses in the downtown Detroit area. The outlet reports that the man was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Instead of serving time, he escaped. He ended up on Detroit’s 2018 Most Wanted list. He evaded the law again later that year when he was caught and arrested in Indiana. Because of an error on some documents during extradition, he was accidentally released.
“The county jail in Indiana and the county jail in Michigan, I’m not sure exactly the details; there was an administration error, and he was eventually released,” Garcia said. ABC 7 reports that Wright would keep a low-profile while the case simmered down. But, a tip told U.S. Marshals that Wright had made his way back to Detroit, and that’s when officials took the opportunity to arrest him.
“We saw him enter into a house which is a known house – a family member’s house – and eventually we made contact at the location,” Garcia said. When they entered the home, they couldn’t find him the first two times. But, the third time, officials were shocked to learn that walls possibly could talk. “There was one spot in the bathroom,” Garcia said. “It looks like a wall where the plumbing would be, but we couldn’t get in it. You couldn’t open it up so, we were going to breach it with the halligan tool. At that time, we started to breach it, he surrenders and comes out and says, you guys got me.”
There are no details on whether or not Wright will receive additional charges. The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office said they are also looking into charges against the family.
