The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has finally obtained Donald Trump’s tax records. Earlier this week, the Supreme Court rejected Trump’s protection from investigators’ subpoena that requested the long-sought documents.
Danny Frost, a spokesman for DA Cyrus Vance, Jr., confirmed the retrieval of the documents. Apparently, prosecutors took possession of the documents on Monday, which was the same day the nation’s highest court rejected Trump’s last effort to block prosecutors from getting them.
Trump has fought hard for years to keep his financial history private and claimed prosecutors were pursuing a politically motivated “fishing expedition” following the Supreme Court’s decision, CBS News reported.
In 2018, the Manhattan DA launched an investigation into the former celebrity-in-chief’s business dealings. Their initial focus was on hush-money payouts made to women who spoke out about their romantic affairs with Trump. But court documents now show the investigation has expanded to include potential tax and business fraud involving the Trump Organization’s valuation of its properties.
Mazars USA—an accounting firm subpoenaed by the DA’s office—said they will fulfill “all of our professional and legal obligations” following the Supreme Court’s Monday ruling.
Court filings show that prosecutors want to look into the wide disparities in how Trump’s company valued properties in its portfolio, including Trump’s valuation of the Seven Springs estate in suburban New York, which ranged between $25 million and $50 million to $261 and $291 million in the past decade.
Other subpoenas suggest investigators are also looking into an expansive 200-acre property that straddles the affluent New York towns of Bedford, New Castle, and North Castle. Ralph Mastromonaco—an engineer who worked on the Seven Springs estate property for Trump, told the news outlet that he received a subpoena on February 11 regarding his past labor.
He also said he complied by turning over maps of the property and other documents he produced for the Trump Organization close to ten years ago.
CBS News also obtained a grand jury subpoena sent to Bedford’s town clerk that requested documents regarding Seven Springs valuations and tax assessments, tax appeals, and conservation easements.
